Experiences Can Be Determined Which Hues That We Like

Yellow or pink flowers? The green or blue sweater? From cars to furniture to iPod, we made decisions about color all the time. Now, scientists are starting to figure out why we like the hues we do.

It is our experiences that determine which colors we prefer, suggests a new study, which was the first to experimentally test the long-suspected idea that people like the colors of the things they like. The findings may help explain why blue is pleasing to people everywhere, why Japanese women tend to like light colors, and why dark yellow is generally unappealing, among other trends.

On the flip side, the study also hints at why one woman might buy orange socks, while the next shopper picks brown-in turn, offering tantalizing fodder for designers, artists and marketing experts. "I might like purple more than you because my sister's bedroom was purple and I had positive experiences there," said Karen Schloss, a graduate student in psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. "Your own personal preference is determined by all the entities you've encountered of that color and how much you liked them."

In their attempts to understand why people like certain colors, scientists have focused on evolution. The main theory is that we like colors that are tied to things that are healthy and promote survival. A blue sky, for example, indicates calm weather, which might explain why blue tends to be a favored color across cultures. Dark yellows and oranges. on the other hand, invoke urine, feces, vomit and rotting food. As expected, there is usually a dip in preference for these hues in studies around the world.

I also knew that the experiences that we had previously obtained can be determined which hues that we tend to like them. Personally, I like green hue because my house is green including my bedroom so that why I really like green hue. Moreover, my mother likes green hue too.

Obsessive Web Suffers Are More Depressed

Spending hours on the Internet may trigger depression, say researchers from Australia and China, Numerous studied have documented the link between mental illness and pathological Internet use, though the majority have found that excessive online behavior tends to occur as a result of conditions such as anxiety and depression, either as a way to self-medicate or as a manifestation of the person's mental state. But what about the reverse? Could pathological Internet browsing lead to depression or other mental problems in people who are otherwise healthy?

That's the question  Lawrence Lam, an epidemiologist at the University of Notre Dame in Frementle, Australia, and his colleague Zi-Wen Peng at SunYat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China, wanted to answer. Using a database of more than 1,000 high school students in Guangzhoy, the pair assessed Internet use and mental health status over a period of nine months. At the start of the study about 6% of the students met the criteria for pathological Web surfing, based on their answers to a 20-question survey assessing addiction to the Internet. These students reported feeling moody, nervous or uncomfortable when they were not on the computer.

Nine months later, researches measured symptoms of anxiety and depression in all the participants and found that those who reported having been more addicted to the Internet to start were 2.5 times more likely to be depressed than those who did not feel so tried to their computers. This was true even of students who did not show signs of depression at the beginning of the study. (Researchers found no association between Internet use and anxiety.)

"This study has a direct implication on the prevention of mental illness among young people," wrote Lam in an e-mail discussing the findings. "The results indicate that people who use the Internet pathologically are most at risk of mental problems and would develop depression when they continue with that behavior."

I also knew that the people who addict to use computer tend to have more emotional changes when they were not on the computer than the people who don't addict.

 Silence in Different Cultures

Most people throughout the world experience some from of silence. However, people's attitude toward silence is dramatically different in cultural groups. Northern European and North American societies, for example, view silence as dark, negative, and full of "nothing"- all of which are considered socially undesirable. In other cultures such as Japan, however, silence is often positively valued. Here, breaking silence is a necessary evil; speaking is a negative act.

According to Wayne's study, the U.S. interpretations of silence are sorrow, criticism, obligation, regret and embarrassment. Australian interpretations proved to be similar to the U.S. ones. However, the Japanese attitude toward silence is favorable. Ishikawa's survey on businessmen and businesswomen in Tokyo revealed that men need to be silent to be successful in life and that 65 percent of businesswomen would choose a silent man to marry.

Not only in business, but in every aspect of social life, people in the United States like to ask questions and force others to talk to fill interpersonal silences. So in U.S. society and in many European societies, one function of speech is to avoid silence. Contrary to the U.S. practice, in Japanese society, silence is generally considered to be meaningful.

I also knew that people from different cultures interpret silence differently. If we will go another country, we should know about culture before we go there in order to be as the people in that country. It likes idiom that When in Rome, do as the Rome do.

Mobile Phones Are a Possible Danger to Children's Health

Just a few minutes' chatting on a mobile phone reduces the brain functions of children for almost an hour, according to new Spanish test results quoted in Norwegian media.

The test, conducted by the German investigator Michael Klieeisen at the Spanish Neuro Diagnostic Reserch Institute in Marbella, are the first to show how children's brains react to the use of mobile phones. With the help of a scanner, Klieeisen was able to create pictures of how the brains of an 11-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl reacted while they used a mobile phone. The results were compared with similar tests using adult subjects.

The tests showed that the brain activity of the child subjects was reduced significantly, especially on the side where the mobile phone was held, a few minutes after the call was begun, the report said. Also, brain activity was lower than normal in large sections of the brain for 50 minutes after the end of the call, the test results showed.

"My advice to all parents is to allow children to use mobile phones," Klieeisen was quoted by Aftenposten as saying. "Not only are electrical activities affected, but also biochemical processes. We do not know if it is dangerous, but we do know that children's brains, which are not fully developed, are more vulnerable than adult brains are," the researcher added.

I also knew that using mobile phones in children can be dangerous to their health. Their parents should encourage use of mobile phones in order to avoid getting danger with their children.

 Technological Advances in Oceanography

Recent technology advances in manned and unmanned undersea vehicles have become some of the limitations of divers and diving equipment. Without a vehicle, divers often became sluggish and their mental concentration became limited. Because of undersea pressure which affected their speech organs, communication among divers was difficult or impossible. But today, most oceanographers make observations by means of instruments which are lowered into the ocean or from samples taken from the water. Direct observation of the ocean floor are made not only by divers but also by deep-diving submarines. Some of these submarines can dive to depths of more than seven miles and cruise at depths of fifteen thousand feet. Radio-equipped buoys can be operated by remote control in order to transmit information back to land-based laboratories, including data about water temperature, currents and weather.

Good Attitude Boots Health as Much                     as Formal Education

Positive factors such as meaningful relationships with others and a sense of purpose can help reduce the negative health impacts of having less schooling, a new study suggests.

It is known that lack of education is a strong predictor of poor health and a relatively early death, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison pointed out. But their new study, published online Oct. 18 in the journal Health Psychology, found that peace of mind can reduce the risk.

"If you didn't go that far in your education, but you walk around feeling [good], you may not be more likely to suffer ill-health than people with a lot of schooling. Low educational attainment does not guarantee bad health consequence, or poor biological regulation," study co-author and psychology professor Carol Ryff in a university news release.

Ryff and her colleagues measured levels of the inflammatory protein interleukin-6 (IL-6) in participants in the Survey of Midlife in the United states, a long-term study of age-related differences in physical and mental health. High levels of IL-6 are associated with a number of health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and some cancers.

The researchers found that people whose education stopped with a high school diploma or less but who had high scores on measures of general happiness or self-acceptance, or who felt their life circumstances were manageable, had IL-6 levels that were comparable to similarly satisfied, but highly educated people.

The findings could help in efforts to narrow the wide gap in overall health between the rich and poor. "Other research shows that these psychological factors respond well to invention," Ryff said. "Therapies exist that give people the tools to keep all these psychological characteristics working in their favor. They've been shown to keep people from falling back into depression and anxiety, which we know means bad things for their health."

I also knew that having good attitude or meaningful relationships with others can make us happy although we don't have high education. Just be optimistic and make a sense of purpose can reduce negative health impacts of having less schooling as well.

Migraines in Children Are Often Overlooked

For kids around the country it's back-to-school time. But for many of them, it's also the return of headache season. Doctors say frequent headaches and migrants are among the most common childhood health complaints, yet the problem gets surprisingly little attention from the medical community. Many pediatricians and parents view migraines as an adult condition. And because many children complain of headache more often during the school year than the summer, parents often think a child is exaggerating symptoms to get out of schoolwork.

Often the real issue, say doctors, is that changes in a child's sleep schedule including getting up early for school and staying up late to study, as well as skipping breakfast, not drinking enough water and weather changes can all trigger migraines when the school year starts.

"In many areas people just don't think kids can get migraines," says Dr. Andrew Hershey, professor of pediatrics and neurology and director of the headache center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. "But kids shouldn't be missing activities and having trouble at school because they're having headaches. If it happens, it should't be ignored."

It's estimated that about 10 percent of young children and up to 28 percent of older teenagers suffer from migraines. (Hormonal changes during can also be a trigger.) But childhood migraine often doesn't show up the same way as an adult migraine. While adult migraines often last four hours or more, in a child, the duration of a migraine can range from as little as one hour up to 72 hours. In adults migraines typically settle on one side of the head, but in children migraine pain is often felt across the front of the forehead of on both temples rather than on just one side. As a result, childhood migraines are often dismissed as sinus headaches.

I also knew that having migraines in children shouldn't be ignored. Their parents should notice or ask them if they have a symptom like headache. In addition, parents should motivate their children to sleep early, have breakfast before going to school etc. If the children have extremely symptoms, their parents should take them go to see doctors in order to remedy respectively. Don't be overlooked and ignored this problem directly.
