A Discourse Approach in Reading week8

8 March 2016

  COMPARISON and CONTRAST

Today, I attended to my class at about 8.25 a.m. and I had to take a MIDTERM TEST. First of all, I and my friends organized the seats in order to test by 8.30 a.m. Then, we attended to test. In my view, I think the test is quite neutral. Because some parts are easy to find the answers but some are quite difficult. I am not sure how much the scores I will get from this test. We took 1.30 hrs in testing and then, we started learning the new lesson which is COMPARISON and CONTRAST respectively.

Next, we started learning the new lesson. First of all, the teacher gave us to think about what is different between Bangkok and Chiangmai. We had to think what is similar too by giving the opinion and writing on the whiteboard.

Here are the words that written by us. Also, we had to discuss what we had written.

Next, she gave us to look at the screen which is apples and oranges pictures. Then, she gave us to write the board about what is similar and different between apples and oranges.

Here are the opinion that written by us after thinking about the similarity and difference of them.

After that, she gave us a handout about this lesson. Then, she gave us to read the text on the screen and asked us about the discourse marker in the text. Also, she asked us about the reference in the text in order to check whether we could exactly understood.

The text is about the high-and-low context cultures. The high culture intends to speak less and listen more, have more skilled in reading non-verbal behaviors, and use indirect and less explicit communication. In contrast, the low culture intends to speak more and listen less, use direct and explicit communication and emphasize verbal messages and the shared information. The teacher gave us to compare and contrast about these on the whiteboard which are as follow :

Next, she explained about the definition of comparison and contrast and assigned us to find the markers to point out comparison and contrast in this handout. Also, we have to make a sentence by putting the marker in each of sentence too.

Then, she assigned us to do homework on page 35-38 in this handout and read the rest of the text in advance. We are going to study on Sunday 13 March.

Eventually, She told us about the score that we had already attended to take a test. I got 30 scores. I was pleasure because I did it my best and it would be enough. She told us that "If you want to be good at English, try and try and try again." It is just ordinary sentence but it has more meanings which make me powerful to do it.

She is my inspiration to be studious in my studying. I will try harder in order to be extremely successful in the future.

 It's time to ask question

 What did you learn today?

I started the new unit which is "Comparison and Contrast" and did the exercises.

 What did you find easy?

In my opinion, guessing the reference is easy for me.

 What did you find difficult?

In my opinion, some discourse markers are difficult because I have never met before.

What did you solve the problem?

I tried to read by guessing and predicting from the context clue.

What are your attitudes towards the lesson?

I think that this lesson is important in reading. And it makes me know about the authors want to describe or explain how two or more things are alike or different.
